Gel permeation chromatography of coal extracts

A Waters chromatograph was used to examine the molecular mass distribution of coal extract using styrogel columns and a tetrahydrofuran elutriating agent. Organic mass extracts obtained by treating the coal with various solvents were analyzed and distribution parameters were calculated by calibrating for polyphenylformaldehyde resins, polystyrene and polynaphthalene. It is suggested that coal is an oligomeric poly-associate with donor-acceptor intermolecular reactions. (9 refs.)
