Sycamore restores sizzle to venerable Sho-Vel-Tum

Journal Article · · Drilling; (United States)

A 2,754-bbl oil discovery in S. Oklahoma in June 1972, generated drilling activity which to date shows 29 wells completed and 11 staked or drilling. The Helmerich and Payne Inc. strike opened Sycamore Mississippian oil production in Stephens County in an area of the Sho-Vel-Tum, one of the oldest and most famous Oklahoma oil fields. In a related development, Continental Oil Co. in Aug. extended the Sycamore oil play 4 miles to the south and dually completed the well as a Hunton zone discovery. At least 4 rotary rigs are running presently, with a handful of locations waiting on contractors. Not a single dry hole has been reported thus far. The location of this new drilling is shown on a section map. In a little more than one year, Helmerich and Payne Inc. has completed 15 wells.
