We formulate a generalized model of giant-resonance decay which takes into account quasidirect, pre-equilibrium, and equilibrium mechanisms of photonucleon emission. Quasidirect emission of nucleons directly from a doorway dipole state is described by means of the shell model. Pre-equilibrium and equilibrium emission of nucleons is considered in terms of the pre-equilibrium-decay model. The predictions of the model are checked in the case of the /sup 40/Ca nucleus.
