This paper discusses how european market unification and the resulting gasoline standards will have an affect on North American refineries. The move to unleaded gasoline in Europe will put increasing pressures of European refineries to increase the volume of gasoline produced from each barrel of crude oil. One solution to this problem is to move toward lighter crudes. Due to the global nature of oil markets, any increased demand for lighter crudes in Europe will result in changes to the supply of light crude available in North America. This change may make heavy crude processing more attractive. Increased heavy crude processing in North America will reduce the volume f gasoline produced. This can be partially offset by improved FCC catalyst selection. Other problems which must be addressed include increased hydrogen requirements for desulfurization, and increases in heavy fuel oil production.
