Microorganisms and petroleum pollutants

Microorganisms play an important natural role in removing polluting petroleum hydrocarbons from contaminated ecosystems. Environmental conditions and hydrocarbon composition influence biodegradation of contaminating oil. Microbial seeding and environmental modification can be used, in certain situations to enhance biodegradation, as part of an overall program aimed at controlling oil pollution.
