Process for the conversion of hydrogen sulfide in gas streams of low hydrogen sulfide concentration to sulfur

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6682738
A gas stream containing hydrogen sulfide in low concentrations is indirectly heated to a temperature sufficient for the catalytic conversion to elemental sulfur by reaction with sulfur dioxide by the Claus process. Simultaneously, a sulfur dioxide containing gas stream is generated by combustion of sulfur with an oxygen containing gas in a flame zone, the sulfur being present in excess of that required to meet the sulfur dioxide requirements of the gas stream. Following recovery of excess sulfur from the combustion products from the flame zone, the gas streams are combined and pass over one or more Claus catalyst conversion stages where sulfur is formed by reaction of hydrogen sulfide with sulfur dioxide and recovered between each stage.
