Process for the treatment of sulfur containing gases

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6580004
This patent describes the treatment of a feed gas stream containing sulfur dioxide in an amount in excess of the stoichiometric equivalent for the Claus reaction with hydrogen sulfide to produce elemental sulfur. It comprises: passing the sulfur dioxide containing feed gas stream to a reaction zone for the production of elemental sulfur by the Claus reaction and an off-gas stream containing sulfur dioxide; passing the off-gas to a hydrogenation zone in which the sulfur dioxide in the off-gas stream is hydrogenated to produce hydrogen sulfide which is contained in an effluent gas stream from the hydrogenation zone; passing the effluent gas stream from the hydrogenation zone to a hydrolysis zone and within the hydrolysis zone hydrolyzing reduced sulfur values in the effluent stream to produce hydrogen sulfide; extracting hydrogen sulfide from the effluent gas to produce a hydrogen sulfide containing recycle stream which is distinct from the feed gas stream; passing the extracted hydrogen sulfide in the recycle stream to the reaction zone in addition to the feed gas stream; and continuing to pass the feed gas stream to the reaction zone, the feed gas stream continuing to contain sulfur dioxide in an amount in excess of the stoichiometric equivalent for the Claus reaction.
