Guide to 1974 sawmill residue volumes in the 125 Tennessee Valley counties

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6680307
The 543 sawmills in the Tennessee Valley produced approximately 2.0 million green tons of wood residue in 1974, up 0.1 million tons from 1970. This residue consists of bark, sawdust, and pieces of wood, such as end trimmings, slabs, and edgings in their original form. Of this material, 1.2 million tons are marketed in some fashion. The remaining 0.8 million tons have to be disposed of in some manner - usually burning or damping. This latter amount is of interest to the fiber, chemical, and energy industries. Utilization of sawmill residues increased 28% from 1970 to 1974. In 1970, 47% of the residues was used and 53% was unused, while in 1974, 60% of the residues was utilized. Utilization of fines increased 38%; bark, 22%; and chippable, 20%. This trend is expected to continue for several more years for bark and fines as they are 31 and 43% used. The upward trend in chippable material will probably slow, as it is already 84% used.
