This patent describes middle distillate fuel oil composition characterized by improved color stability which comprises a major portion of a middle distillate fuel oil; and a minor effective portion of an additive mixture consisting of: (a) a bis-nitrogenous heterocyclic diester of a dibasic acid having a molecular weight of about 200 to about 800 and of the formula where R/sup 1/, R/sup 2/, R/sup 3/ and R/sup 4/ each are H, CH/sub 3/-OR CH/sub 3/-CH/sub 2/-; and R/sup 5/ is CH/sub 2/-, -CH/sub 2/-, -(CH/sub 2/)/sub 3/, -(CH/sub 2/),/sub 4/, -(CH/sub 2/)/sub 5/-, -(CH/sub 2/)/sub 6/-, -(CH/sub 2/)/sub 7/- or -(CH/sub 2/)-/sub 8/; (b) a rate earth metal salt of a (C/sub 3/-C/sub 25/) fatty acid; and (c) an (C/sub 3/-C/sub 16/) alkyl carbitol.
