The basic function of steam blowing is the cleaning of boiler superheater anad reheater sections, and associated piping running from the boiler to the turbine, removing piping deposits, iron oxide, pipe slag, and other foreign deposits, and thereby eliminating as far as possible the chance of turbine damage. Various steps in the design, and also in the actual conduct of the steam-blowing operation, to make critical areas more understandable are described. The objectives are to ensure minimum dirt and debris, minimum blowing time, and minimum cost for temporary piping and valves. The information given is based on experience with supercritical and drum units at such stations of the Italian Power Authority as Porto Tolle and La Spezia.
