Federal government report looks at electric power

Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, in cooperation with utilities and the Canadian Electrical Association, has published a new report on electric power in Canada that includes sections on electrical generation, trading of electricity, and non-utility generation. The report, published in large 1992, looks at the electric power industry in Canada during 1991. Regulatory structures, generating capacity and reserve, and the future of the electric power industry also are discussed in Electric Power in Canada 1991. Although hydro's share of total installed capacity has declined from 81 percent in 1960, hydro remains the most important source of electrical energy in Canada. In 1991, hydro's capacity share accounted for more than 58 percent of total installed capacity. The report also identifies a planning potential for sites totaling 43,886 MW that are likely candidates for development. The 165-page report includes tables on: installed generating capacity, 1960-1991; Canada's largest hydro stations; Canada's hydroelectric capacity; installed generating capacity by fuel type and province; and Canadian-US electricity trade. It also includes figures on electricity generation and installed generating capacity by fuel type. The document features appendices on remaining hydroelectric potential, by province, federal environmental standards and guidelines, and prices paid by major utilities for non-utility generation.
