1991 hydro highlights

A review of hydroelectric projects that came on line in 1991 and a preview of plans for 1992 indicate action in all segments of the North American hydro industry. New projects range in size from a 7-kW unit built and operated by a farmer in Washington State to a 2,000-MW project that is part of an ongoing massive hydroelectric development in northern Canada. In the US, 22 new plants came on line in 14 states, contributing about 1,200 MW of capacity to the US electrical supply. In Canada, the presence of private power producers was more noticeable than ever before. Eight independent developers in three provinces brought plants on line, contributing nearly 35 MW of capacity. In addition, units at two large, utility-owned projects began generating power, a total of 1,532 MW. The development activity in 1991 indicates positive movement in all segments of the North American hydro industry. Owners of new projects can be grouped into three categories: utilities (both investor-owned and public); government entities (cities, counties, and states); and private developers (construction companies, industries, single-purpose development companies and entrepreneurs).
