Slip retention mechanism for subterranean well packer

This patent describes an improvement in a well packer having a tubular body and a cone element mounted on the body for axial movement. It comprises: a slip retention sleeve surrounding the path of axial movement of the cone element and defining an annular space around the body, segment-shaped slips insertable in the annular space and radially shiftable outwardly by axial movement of the cone element; each the slip having an axially extending slot in its outer surface; the retention sleeve having peripherally spaced windows formed therein and separated by axially extending bar portions. The slots being respectively aligned with the bar portions; elongated leaf springs respectively mounted between the solid bar portions and the axial slots in the slips for engaging axially spaced regions of the slips to bias and slips radially inwardly, and each the leaf spring having an axially extending tail portion and hook means on the end of each tail portion.
