On January 26, 1987 the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board approved for Phase II of a cyclic steam commercial oil sands project located in the Wolf Lake area, approximately 45 kilometers north of the town of Bonnyville, Alberta. Production from the project will average 3300 cubic meters of bitumen per day from the existing 266 wells (Wolf Lake I) and the 248 wells to be drilled during the initial development of Wolf Lake II. Additional wells will be drilled in both phases to maintain the production levels over the project life of 25 years. The scheme will also entail the expansion of the central processing and steam generation facilities and the construction of a water recycle and treatment facility designed to handle up to 20,000 cubic meters per day of produced water.
