Breeder reactor in the US: a new economic analysis

Journal Article · · Technol. Rev.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6667653
The authors address two main issues concerning the economics of the breeder reactor program: is there a need to extend uranium resources; and can electricity be produced more cheaply by breeder reactors than by LWR reactors. They conclude that, because of ample reserves in the US, the future supply of uranium is a question of cost and time scale rather than availability. The overall cost of electricity produced by breeders is a matter of considerable uncertainty and depends primarily on the cost of uranium in the future.
