Geothermal energy technology and the investment practices of resource developers and electric utilities in using geothermal resources for the production of electric power are covered. An analytical framework, a decision model, is developed from basic principles of multiobjective decision analysis and probabilistic choice theory for evaluating geothermal investment behavior of both resource developers and power producers. The decision model is used to estimate the potential role of geothermal energy in the US over the next several decades and the relative effectiveness of alterative government incentives or other public policy initiatives for accelerating the development of geothermal electric power production in specific resources areas.
