Currently, 15,000 ton/day of sludge solids are removed from U.S. wastewater treatment plants. Co-disposal techniques for the sludge and for municipal solid wastes rely on two basic approaches. Sewage sludge incinerators already at treatment plants burn the sludge using the organic portion of solid wastes and reduce the volume of sludge that must ultimately be disposed of. A second system uses an incinerator, solid waste-fired steam generator, or waterwall combustion unit to burn dewatered sludge. Fluidized-bed combustion, multiple hearth furnace, incineration and spray drying, incineration and rotary drying, incineration and furance drying, waterwall combustion thin film drying, and waterwall combustion flash drying co-disposal facilities in operation are described.
