Instability of magnetosonic waves in open confinement systems

The anisotropy of the ion velocity distribution which is characteristic of the plasma in an open confinement system can cause a growth of magnetosonic waves. This instability involves the growth of waves at harmonics of the ion cyclotron frequency, in contrast with the well-known instability of Alfven waves. This instability may have been observed in experiments in the TMX device, where waves were excited at both the ion cyclotron frequency and its harmonics.
