Preparation and characterization of single-crystal RBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O(7-delta) (R = Er, Ho). Technical report No. 31, 1 July 1987-15 July 1988

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6663065
Large (1.5 mm x 1.5 mm x 0.05 mm) single crystals of RBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O(7-delta) (R = Er, Ho) were grown from nonstoichiometric mixtures of BaCO/sub 3/-R/sub 2/O/sub 3/-CuO. Crystals of ErBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O(7-delta) and HoBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O(7-delta) grown in alumina crucibles have small orthorhombic distortions and are superconducting with resistive Tc (onsets) = 87 K and 80 K respectively. Crystals of ErBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O(7-delta) grown in ZrO/sub 2/ crucibles show an onset of diamagnetism at 82 K. A number of experiments were carried out in order to optimize the crystal-growth parameters.
