MLGW coal-gasification project seen viable, vital, and duplicable in other urban areas. [Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division]

MLGW remains confident in the success of a long-term effort to build an industrial fuel gas (IFG) plant in Memphis that will provide a stable source of energy from proven US coal resources. Based on IGT's U-GAS process, the plant will give its industrial customers a clean, medium-Btu fuel gas equivalent to 50 million CF/day of natural gas from about 3200 tons of high-sulfur Western Kentucky bituminous coal. Gas from the plant will replace present industrial energy sources (natural gas and fuel oil) in steam-raising and process-heat applications. Additionally, it is a suitable synthesis gas for producing methanol or other chemicals. This IFG plant concept can be duplicated in many urban areas throughout the US.
