Exotic heavy-ion reactions on /sup 40/Ca: (/sup 14/C,/sup 14/O) double charge exchange and (/sup 14/C,/sup 15/O) rearrangement transfer

Double charge exchange is observed for the first time with heavy ions by using the reaction /sup 40/Ca(/sup 14/C, /sup 14/0)/sup 40/Ar at 51 MeV incident energy. Angular distributions for the rear-rangement-transfer reaction /sup 40/Ca(/sup 14/C, /sup 15/0)/sup 39/Ar were also measured, and both exotic reactions are compared with the more usual one- and two-proton transfer reactions (/sup 14/C, /sup 15/N) and (/sup 14/C, /sup 16/0). Cross sections for the exotic processes are surprisingly large: ..cap alpha..10 ..mu..b/sr for (/sup 14/C, /sup 14/0) and approx.200 ..mu..b/sr for (/sup 14/C, /sup 15/0).
