XeF(B. -->. X) laser optically excited by incoherent Xe/sub 2/ (172-nm) radiation

Incoherent optical pumping of the XeF laser has been demonstrated. Stimulated emission on the B..-->..X band of XeF at 349, 351, and 353 nm has been obtained by photolyzing XeF/sub 2/ with Xe/sub 2/* spontaneous emission (172 nm). Peak power of approx.1.3 KW in a approx.30-nsec FWHM pulse has been observed from a high-Q resonator (approx.0.1% transmission/mirror).
