Evidence from x-ray, 3/2. omega. /sub 0/, and 2. omega. /sub 0/ emission for laser filamentation in a plasma

With long-pulse (4 nsec), moderate-intensity (approx. =10/sup 13/ W/cm/sup 2/) Nd-laser irradiation of flat targets, time-integrated images of (3/2)..omega../sub 0/ and 2..omega../sub 0/ emission reveal filaments along the laser axis. Combined with fine-scale structure found in x-ray images, these filaments suggest self-focusing of hot spots in the incident beam.
