Sensitization of ytterbium--erbium glasses by chromium ions in the amplification mode

The influence of Cr/sup 3 +/ions in phosphate ytterbium--erbium (Yb--Er) glasses on the energetics of the amplification regime on the /sup 4/I/sub 13//sub ///sub 2/-/sup 4/I/sub 15//sub ///sub 2/ transition of Er/sup 3 +/ ions (lambda = 1.54 ..mu..m) during lamp pumping has been studied. It is shown that the efficiency of sensitization of Yb--Er glasses by Cr/sup 3 +/ ions in this regime differs appreciably from that in the free-running regime, in particular, conditions exist under which quenching of Yb/sup 3 +/ ions by Cr/sup 3 +/ ions is observed instead of the expected sensitization. The efficiency of energy transfer from Cr/sup 3 +/ to Yb/sup 3 +/ and Er/sup 3 +/ ions is estimated quantitatively for various pumping conditions and ratios of activator concentrations.
