Method for improving the energy parameters of flash-pumped ytterbium--erbium glass lasers

Optimum conditions are studied experimentally for maximizing the energy parameters of cw lasing from Er/sup 3 +/ ions (/sup 4/I/sub 13/2/..-->../sup 4/I/sub 15/2/ transition, wavelength lambda = 1.54 ..mu..m) in ytterbium--erbium glass lasers. It is shown that allowance for the spectroscopic properties of ytterbium--erbium glasses makes it possible to greatly increase the laser efficiency if the pump parameters are optimized. The efficiency can be increased to 0.7% for optimum pump pulse durations (8--10)x10/sup -3/ s and electrical pump energies 800--1000 J.
