The Tennessee Valley Authority has signed a partnering agreement worth about $200 million with Voith Hydro, Inc., Voith will upgrade and refurbish all of TVA's major hydroturbines as part of the power producer's hydro modernization program. The program will add 240 MW of generating capacity to the TVA system by the year 2000. Under the terms of the agreement, Voith will supply approximately 75 replacement turbine runners and other components. The ten-year agreement requires renewal every two years. Separate from their partnering agreement, TVA awarded Voith a major runner replacement contract that calls for the turbine manufacturer to supply two 65-MW Francis runners for TVA's Norris Dam hydro plant. The runners will be equipped with methods of air admission previously tested on a model scale at Voith's laboratory. In 1991, TVA and Voith completed a joint developmental effort in that laboratory, where researchers tested various means of introducing atmospheric air into the water passing through a hydraulic turbine to increase the level of dissolved oxygen. The research program yielded promising results - results that now need verification on a full-size prototype basis. The first of these two runners will be installed in the summer of 1994.
