NYPA starts overhaul work at Blenheim-Gilboa project

The New York Power Authority has begun an overhaul of the 1,040-MW Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped-Storage Power Project. Each of the project's four generators will be refurbished, at a rate of one each year. The final unit is to be completed in January 1996. With one unit out of service, the maximum power output from the 20-year-old project will be 780 MW. Voith Hydro has a contract to oversee the renovation. General Electric Co. will replace the stator winding on each pump-generator. NYPA crews will refurbish the water wheels on each unit. Each overhaul will cost about $4.5 million.
