In [sup 238]U interactions with nuclear emulsion at an energy of [approx]1[ital A] GeV from the Bevatron at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, nuclei with [ital Z] up to 90 have been observed as a function of the associated proton multiplicity. With increasing centrality of the collisions---measured through the yield of proton multiplicity [ital N][sub [ital p]---]the average number of intermediate-mass fragments [l angle][ital N][sub IMF][r angle] of charge 3[le][ital Z][le]35 first increases, attains a maximum value of [l angle][ital N][sub IMF][r angle]=5.5 for the semicentral collisions and for the most central collisions it decreases.
