Prospects for earthquake prediction wane

Journal Article · · Science; (United States)
Successful prediction of several earthquakes in the mid-1970's through the use of precursors led to the hope that earthquake prediction might be more generally successful. Since then a number of earthquakes have occurred without short-term precursors. Work continues, but even the most optimistic researchers now concede that precursors may often prove unreliable. Increased attention is being given to measurement of physical properties such as stress. (RWR)
