Diesel trends emphasize cetane quality, economics, and prediction

The new emphasis on the diesel engine in passenger cars has resulted in greater demand for diesel fuel. Petroleum refiners must decide how quality is to be maintained in the face of this increasing demand. This paper addresses two major areas that are fundamental for comparing future refining parameters involving diesel fuel. The first area is cetane quality and the economics involved in maintaining and/or increasing quality. The other area is cetane prediction for both day-to-day operation and long range planning. In the past, from the standpoint of planning and forecasting, application of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) cetane index nomograph was satisfactory to ensure constant quality. Today, the refining industry is involved in a changing gasoline-to-diesel ratio and must be ready for new demands on both volume and quality of diesel fuel. The changes occuring in crude oil production and the vagaries of the crude oil market are also adding to the future problems of cetane quality declining. Maximum flexibility to improve cetane quality along with the best possible tools to predict diesel fuel quality to meet demand with a wide range of parameters are cited as future needs.
