Diesel fuel quality and trends

Journal Article · · Natl. Pet. Refiners Assoc., (Tech. Pap.); (United States)

This paper reviews the projected growth in automotive diesel production and the implications on the future demand and quality for diesel fuel. Current diesel fuel is generally of good quality with respect to cetane, sulfur content, and distillation range. However, quality is expected to deteriorate in the future in view of the continued reduction in quality of available crude oils. To meet demand and maintain quality, the refining industry must ultimately build costly new processing capacity. What is needed is further determination of actual engine quality requirements and development of engines to make the best use of the available crude oil.
