The (p,p. cap alpha. ) and (. cap alpha. ,2. cap alpha. ) reactions on /sup 6/Li and /sup 7/Li at 60 MeV

An investigation of the alpha cluster knockout reaction has been made by studying the /sup 6,7/Li(p,p..cap alpha..)/sup 2,3/H and the /sup 6,7/Li(..cap alpha..,2..cap alpha..)/sup 2,3/H reactions using approximately 60 MeV incident particles. Both energy sharing and angular correlation experiments have been performed near a quasi-free angle pair, and alpha cluster momentum distributions vertical bar /phi(q)//sup 2/ extracted by means of the plane wave impulse approximation. The momentum distributions extracted from the (p,p..cap alpha..) reactions for the two experimental techniques are in good agreement and have the shape expected for the knockout of an L = O ..cap alpha..-cluster from /sup 6/Li and an L = 1 ..cap alpha..-cluster from /sup 7/Li. The shapes of the vertical bar /phi(q)//sup 2/ extracted from the (..cap alpha..,2..cap alpha..) energy sharing experiments are in reasonably good agreement with the (p,p..cap alpha..) results; the agreement in magnitude being within the experimental uncertainties. However, the angular correlation results for /sup 7/Li(..cap alpha..,2..cap alpha..)/sup 3/H show large discrepancies, casting doubt on the analysis of the (..cap alpha..,2..cap alpha..) reaction with the normal impulse approximation. A discussion of the effects of various methods of making the quasi-free approximation is given. 25 refs., 16 figs., 2 tabs.
