Union Carbide completes takeover of Coalcon

Chemical Construction Corp., a subsidiary of Aerojet-General Corp. (a part of General Tire and Rubber Co.), has transferred its share of Coalcon Co. to its joint-venture partner, Union Carbide Corp. Since Coalcon is still a paper operation, very little cash was involved in the transaction. Coalcon is working on a four-phase program with ERDA which may lead to operation of a large coal conversion demonstration plant in the US. The total eight-year projected cost of the program is slightly more than $237 million. ERDA is supplying nearly all of the $21.5 million required for the first two engineering phases. Aerojet will continue coal conversion activities through its divisions, including subsidiary Barnard and Burk, which is working with Coalcon on the ERDA project.
