Urbanization and the ecological crisis: an analysis of environmental pollution

Book ·
OSTI ID:6631003
This study is aimed primarily at the United States, but as development in industry and urbanization proceeds in other countries, they will contribute to pollution on a global scale. It focuses primarily on the principal causes and effects of environmental pollution. Many of the pollution problems are related to urban centers, especially larger cities where environmental degradation is much more intense and the consequences more acute. Chapter II considers the human environment and the natural systems in relation to the major areas of environmental concerns, such as urbanization, energy resources, agriculture, industry, and domestic households. In Chapter III attention is drawn to the major sociological and ecological problems related to the patterns of human settlement and migration in the U.S. Chapter IV examines some of the technical aspects of environmental pollution for each of the current major national concerns: air, water, solid waste, radiation, pesticides, and noise pollution. An analysis is also made of the effects of the pollutants on health and social well-being. Chapter V focuses on the problems of the inner city, the area most affected by environmental degradation and the ramifications of poverty. Finally in Chapter VI the principal conclusions of the study are summarized, with emphasis on what needs to be done to improve the urban environment.
