In this article the sources of the major public concerns about the environment are discussed. An example of how earth scientists can set environmental problems in perspective is given. Some of the major pollution problems, emphasizing principally those relating to geophysics are surveyed. A discussion of an aspect of national politics as it relates to the environment is followed by an outline of ways in which geophysicists can obtain a piece of the environmental action. 10 references.
