The objective of this study is to improve load turndown in a bubbling fluidized combustor by using a two-bed design. The combustor consists of a central bed, which supports combustion of coal, and a surrounding annular bed, which controls heat transfer from the central bed. Load turndowns up to 12.4 were achieved while burning three different fuel forms: crushed coal, coal-limestone briquettes, and coal-water-limestone mixture (CWLM). 5 figs., 2 tabs.
