Coal gasification for Sears Island

This paper reports on the construction of an integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) demonstration plant on Sears Island, Maine. The current state-of-the-art, the incentives to continue work on plants using a gasification process, and the necessary successive steps to go from the current state-of-the-art to a mature technology are discussed. A DOE-sponsored study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of licensing, designing, constructing, and operating a nominal 500-MW commercial-sized IGCC power plant using Eastern high-sulfur coal at Sears Island. The major systems of the IGCC plant configuration include coal receiving, handling and storage; the air separation plant; slurry preparation; the gasification train; raw gas conditioning; acid gas removal and sulfur recovery; combined-cycle power generation; and water and waste treatment. The application of the coal gasification process to produce synthesis fuel gas for power generation offers many advantages over the conventional coal-fired steam unit, including lower busbar cost, better environmental compatibility and modular construction.
