Numerous examples of five coordination of Cu(II) are known and have been reviewed by O'Brien (1984) and Hathaway (1982, 1983). The ability of the bis (1, 10-phenanthroline) copper (II) cation to add an additional ligand to make a five coordinate species is well documented. Structures previously reported for Cu(phen)[sub 2] X cations include complexes in which X is a small molecule or ion such as Cl- (Boys et al., 1981), CN- (Anderson, 1975) and H[sub 2]O (Nakai et al., 1975; Nakai et al., 1978) and, more recently, a large heterocycle such as 3,5-dimethyl-pyridine (Jeter et al., 1988). With a small ligand near trigonal bipyramidal geometry seems to prevail, but, with the large heterocylic ligand the geometry approximately a square pyramid. In this work, we report the structure of a second complex with a large heterocylic ligand, 4-aminopyridine.
