What's happening with coal gasification technology

Journal Article · · Hydrogen Process; ()

Although earlier coal gasifiers almost exclusively produced low- or medium-Btu gas, current interest centers around large-scale and near-commercial gasifers for synthesis and high-Btu gas production. In the early 1970s, efforts to improve first-generation gasification and liquefaction technologies resulted in significant advancements in the British Gas/Lurgi slagging gasifier, the Ruhr 100 high-pressure gasifier, the Shell Koppers (S-K) gasifier, the Texaco (TCGP) gasifier, the high-temperature Winkler (HTW) gasifier, and the Westinghouse and U-GAS processes. Scheduled for completion in late 1984, the Great Plains gasification plant will produce 137.5 million SCF/day of SNG, making it the first commercial SNG plant in the US.
