Continuous modes in hollow dielectric waveguides and in a free space are described for the case of slab and cylindrical structures. The continuous modes in free space are compared with Gaussian modes, in particular for the output beam of a slab FIR laser. It is found that knowledge of all the discrete and continuous modes inside the guide is necessary to perform a balance of energy, and from a theoretical point of view, it is possible to know the waist and the mode spectrum of a laser output Gaussian beam by developing the continuous modes found through the couplage into Gaussian modes.
