Breakthrough projected for nuclear waste disposal
Dr. Herbert H. Woodson, Chairman of the Electrical Engineering Dept., Univ. of Texas, presented the possibility at the September meeting of the Joint Power Generation Conference that nuclear wastes could be transmuted to harmless substances as a solution to the waste-disposal problem. He also reviewed other future breakthroughs in store for the electric utilities. Recognizing the hazards of proliferation, he feels that fuel reprocessing should be separated from the issue in light of the important role nuclear power will play. He sees transmutation as a safer alternative than containment and one that is technologically possible in the near future. He also predicts that electric utilities burning coal will turn to pressurized, fluidized-bed combustion because of the high costs of pollution control.
