US interests and global natural resources: energy, minerals, food

Book ·
OSTI ID:6604692
International trade in natural resources consists of interwoven threads of demand and supply which influence foreign policy. US natural resource policy should not be formulated in isolation from world events on a resource-by-resource basis, with the key factors being domestic interests. Yet the US government is not well structured to permit natural resources and environmental quality to be considered in foreign policy deliberations, nor for foreign policy objectives to be reflected in natural resource or environmental policy. The authors explore several key ideas in the international dimension of resources, with separate chapters on energy, nonfuel minerals, and food. The final chapters discuss the relationship between US foreign policy and global natural resources and the inevitability of unexpected political and economic events. 49 references, 7 figures, 6 tables
