Long wait on pipeline nears end for North Slope operators

When Alyeska is ready to receive oil into its pipeline system next year, Prudhoe Bay will be ready to deliver it. Atlantic Richfield Co. and BP Alaska Inc., the operators of the 10-billion-bbl field are working on drilling and completion programs which will bring Prudhoe to a 600,000-bpd production capability by next spring and to 1,200,000 bpd later in the year. Barring a repetition of last year's near fiasco with the sea lift through the Bering Sea to Prudhoe Bay, the facilities required to process and move the oil from the wellhead to Pump Station 1 of the trans-Alaska pipeline will be completed on schedule. With production startup scarcely a year away, the field owners are now under pressure to complete a unit agreement among themselves acceptable to the State of Alaska. The agreement should be ready to present in preliminary form to the state Oil and Gas Division in July, and the Division should approve a final agreement before the end of the year.
