This article with 130 references reviews several aspects of waste management in the pulp and paper industry. The review first presents a general background on the economics and national policies applicable to paper industrial wastes, and effluent sources, and the biological and mutagenic effects of pulp and paper mill effluents. The physiocochemical and biological methods of waste treatment discussed include chemical coagulation, filtration, color reduction, ultrafiltration, sludge processing, and anaerobic processes.
