Twenty-four witnesses from the administration and the private sector spoke at a two-day hearing on two bills (S. 2431 and S. 2432) dealing with amended extensions to the Solid Waste Disposal Act. Major issues concern the enforcement of regulations and standards and the siting of waste-treatment facilities. Spokesmen for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) described efforts to implement the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and to expedite the permitting procedure for hazardous-waste facilities. Other witnesses described and evaluated the technologies involved in treating hazardous materials. Statements by 20 manufacturers and interested companies followed each day's testimony. (DCK)
