Apache Corp. more than doubled gas flow this spring at a deep Anadarko Basin well in W. Oklahoma using a high-strength bauxite as the fracturing treatment proppant. Gas production at Apache's l Clay, 25-14n-26w, Roger Mills County, has been increased to a rated 12.1 MMcfd through an 18/64-in. choke at 5,200 psi. Flow is from upper Morrow perforations at 14,896 to 14,926 ft. Before the frac, testing rate late in 1977 was 5.2 MMcfd at 2,200 psi, and that figure was reached after the hole was acidized with 6,000 gal of 7-1/2% HCl to remove damage caused by drilling fluid and squeeze cementing. The well made an initial 2 MMcfd before acidizing. Bauxite was chosen because of its high strength and crush resistance in high-pressure formations such as the ones in the deeper portions of the Anadarko Basin. Apache says it anticipates using more bauxite fracturing on other Anadarko Basin wells, if it can get the bauxite (bauxite is in short supply at present).
