Invariant differential cross sections are presented for the charge exchange of helium-3 nuclei to tritons on carbon nuclei, measured at small angles thetaapprox. <0.4/sup 0/ with an absolute normalization uncertainty of approx.10% for momenta between 4.4 and 10.8 GeV/c, and less than or equal to20% for 18.3 GeV/c. The cross sections were corrected for effects due to the momentum resolution of the spectrometer. It was found that the main contribution to the cross section was due to ..delta..-isobar excitation of the target nucleus, with some indications of collective effects. This conclusion follows from comparison of cross sections obtained here with those from the p(/sup 3/He,t)..delta../sup + +/ reaction, and also from analysis of effects of Fermi motion of nucleons within the nucleus and calculations of cross sections (dsigma/d..cap omega..)(0/sup 0/) for ..delta..-isobar formation in charge-exchange reactions on a nucleus and on a free proton.
