Coal distribution, January-March 1982

This report presents quarterly US coal distribution data for January-March 1982, aggregated at the US coal producing area, coal producing district, census region, and state leels covering the following subjects: production and puchases; distribution (domestic and foreign); methods of transportation; consumer sector destination; and coal stocks. Coal distribution data for the January-March periods of 1978 to 1982 are presented so that comparisons may be made. Data for 1980 to 1982 include both anthracite and bituminous coal distribution while data for 1978 and 1979 cover only bituminous coal distribution. Production and/or purchases of coal produced in the United States from January-March 1982 totaled 218.7 million tons. Of this amount, 210.8 million tons were shiped to consumers and 8.0 million tons were added to coal stocks. Of the total coal distributed from January-March 1982, 180.9 million tons went to consumers in the United States (including the District of Columbia) and a total of 29.9 million tons was shipped for export - 3.5 million tons to Canada and 26.3 million tons to Mexico and destinations overseas. A summary of the coal shipments to consumersin the United States showed that 149.8 million tons went to electric utility plants, 12.6 million tons went to coke plants, 16.0 million tons went to other industrial consumers, a total of 2.1 million tons was distributed for residential/commercial consumers, and 0.002 million tons went to the transportation sector (railroad fuel and vessel fuel). The consumer category for 0.4 million tons was either unknown or concealed to avoid the disclosure of individual company data. A summary of the mode of transport showed that 107.2 million tons were shipped by rail, 28.9 million tons by water, 27.1 million tons by truck, and 17.1 million tons by tramway/conveyor or slurry pipeline.
