Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6475028
This report presents quarterly US coal distribution data for January-December 1981, aggregated at the US coal producing area, coal producing district, census region, and state levels covering the following subjects: production and purchases; distribution (domestic and foreign); methods of transportation; consumer sector destination; and coal stocks. Coal distribution data are presented for the January-December periods of 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981 so that comparisons may be made. Data for 1980 and 1981 include both anthracite and bituminous coal distribution while data for 1978 and 1979 cover only bituminous coal distribution. Production and/or purchases of coal produced in the United States from January-December 1981 totaled 819.3 million tons. A total of 820.8 million tons, including 1.4 million tons taken from coal stocks, was shipped to consumers. The January-December 1981 coal production was curtailed by the United Mine Workers of America strike that began on March 27 and ended on June 7. A summary of the coal shipments to consumers in the United States showed that 580.3 million tons went to electric utility plants, 58.1 million tons went to coke plants, 62.8 million tons went to other industrial consumers, a total of 6.9 million tons was distributed for residential/commercial consumers, and 0.1 million tons went to the transportation sector (railroad fuel and vessel fuel). Of the total coal distributed from January-December 1981, 709.5 million tons went to consumers in the United States (including the District of Columbia) and a total of 11.3 million tons was exported - 15.2 million tons to Canada and 96.1 million tons to Mexico and destinations overseas. A summary of mode of transport revealed that 420.9 million tons were shipped by rail, 121.1 million tons were shipped by water, 103.7 million tons by truck, and 62.0 million tons by tramway/conveyor and slurry pipeline.
