All the physical characteristics and equipment parameters listed in the accompanying nomenclature box have a bearing on the overall accuracy of the meter-proving installation. However, the importance of some varies from installation to installation. Statistical analysis can reveal these most important variables in a particular meter-proving facility. Chapter 12 of the American Petroleum Institute's Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (MPMS) provides procedures for proving meters used in the oil industry. Despite the detailed nature of the procedures, there are still many important choices left to individual discretion. As a result, oil and gas companies have established their own procedures, and these vary from company to company. Some of the procedural options which have an influence on proving accuracy are described.
